It will store 400,000 tonnes of CO2 annually in a depleted oil reservoir beneath the Nini platform, eventually scaling to eight million tonnes by 2030.
The project uses CO2 from European biomass power plants and leverages the North Sea’s extensive geological data from decades of oil and gas activity.
The EU aims for 50 million tonnes of annual storage by 2030, supported by other projects like Norway’s Northern Lights.
Despite high costs and limited commercial uptake, CCS is seen as crucial for decarbonizing industries like steel and cement, though environmental groups warn it may delay fossil fuel phaseouts.
