Ghana’s president vows legal action over $97M cathedral fund misuse, with project to become cultural center.
President John Dramani Mahama has pledged full legal consequences for anyone found guilty of embezzling funds from Ghana’s National Cathedral project, following a forensic audit that revealed unsupported payments, weak financial controls, and poor contract management between 2021 and 2023.
The Auditor-General’s office commissioned the audit after a Deloitte Ghana report highlighted risks to the project’s sustainability and significant deficiencies in documentation and revenue reconciliation.
The project, which cost about $97 million, is under scrutiny amid public concern over rising expenses and lack of transparency.
While the government maintains that investigations are ongoing and accountability will be enforced, the stalled cathedral is now planned to be repurposed into a National Cultural Convention Centre to boost Ghana’s creative economy and cultural diplomacy.
El presidente de Ghana promete acciones legales por el mal uso del fondo de la catedral de $ 97M, con el proyecto de convertirse en un centro cultural.
