A UVic-led team won €100,000 for 15 years of research on Arctic climate impacts, merging Indigenous knowledge with science to help communities adapt.
A University of Victoria-led team, working with the Gwich’in Tribal Council, has won the Frederik Paulsen Arctic Academic Action Award for its 15-year project documenting how climate change is altering Arctic landscapes through permafrost thaw and tundra fires.
The research, which blends Indigenous knowledge with scientific modeling, aims to predict environmental changes and support community adaptation, particularly regarding disrupted caribou migration and fishing access.
The €100,000 award will fund expanded collaboration with Gwich’in knowledge holders in the Northwest Territories.
