Uttar Pradesh's Bar Council suspends 98 advocates with criminal records, following court orders and a petition by a lawyer facing charges.
The Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh has unanimously decided to suspend the licenses of 98 advocates listed in police records as "history-sheeters" or gangsters, with disciplinary proceedings ongoing against 23.
The move, taken suo motu, followed a petition by advocate Mohammad Kafeel, who faces criminal charges including under the UP Gangsters Act.
The Allahabad High Court, presided by Justice Vinod Diwakar, directed the council to submit a pen drive with records of all practicing advocates for verification and accepted a compliance affidavit and district-wise list of cases against lawyers.
The council reported over 500,000 enrolled advocates, with nearly 250,000 holding practice certificates.
