The UK's 13th Big Farmland Bird Count, Feb 6–22, 2026, invites public bird surveys to track declining farmland species.
The Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust’s Big Farmland Bird Count will run February 6–22, 2026, inviting UK participants to spend 30 minutes observing farmland birds, with data collected via a new PerdixPro app or paper forms. The 13th annual survey aims to track declining populations, with over 60% of farmland birds lost in 50 years. Last year, nearly 359,000 birds were recorded across 1,332 surveys, including 26 red-listed species. Notable declines included fieldfares and curlews, while common gulls and kestrels increased. The event highlights conservation efforts like hedgerow management and supplemental feeding, with 65% of participating farms in agri-environment schemes.
