Tens of thousands of retail and hospitality workers in the Hunter region are being urged to verify their holiday pay rates during the Christmas period, as Unions NSW launches a compliance campaign to prevent underpayment.
With over 37,000 in retail and 25,000 in hospitality employed in the area as of February 2025, the union warns employers may misclassify shutdown days as annual leave or fail to pay penalty rates that can exceed double the regular wage.
Assistant Secretary Thomas Costa stressed that wage theft is intentional, not accidental, and emphasized workers’ rights to refuse unreasonable holiday requests and use options like leave in advance, time in lieu, or RDOs if needed.
Union organizers are monitoring workplaces in real time to address violations.
