Shanghai Electric starts building Iraq’s Euphrates power upgrade using Chinese tech, adding 625 MW and boosting efficiency 50%.
Shanghai Electric has begun construction on Iraq’s Euphrates Combined Cycle Expansion Project, upgrading power plants in four governorates by converting simple-cycle units to combined-cycle systems.
The project, which adds 625 megawatts of capacity and boosts efficiency by about 50%, will generate an additional 5 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually without increasing fuel use.
It uses Chinese-designed and manufactured equipment, including heat recovery steam generators and air-cooled condensers, marking one of Iraq’s first full-scale power upgrades relying on Chinese technology.
The initiative aims to alleviate long-standing electricity shortages, reduce reliance on imported natural gas, and support post-war reconstruction and economic development.
