A prison medical aide and inmate were indicted for smuggling K2 that caused a fatal overdose at South Dakota’s State Penitentiary.
Natalie Krause, 25, a former prison medical aide, and inmate Cole Waters, 26, have been indicted on nine felony charges related to the November 2025 drug overdose death of inmate Travis Long Fox at South Dakota’s State Penitentiary.
Authorities allege Krause smuggled synthetic marijuana, known as K2, into the prison on paper, which was passed to Waters and then to Fox.
Both face charges including distribution of a controlled substance resulting in death, conspiracy, and aiding and abetting, with Krause also charged for possessing an unauthorized item.
Waters, already serving a 65-year sentence, could face a doubled term if convicted.
The case is part of an ongoing investigation into eight suspected inmate drug overdose deaths this year, with more charges expected.
