A new Greek-built ferry launched on Guyana’s Essequibo River to strengthen regional ties and sovereignty claims.
A US$5 million Greek-made ferry, now named MV Konawaruk 1899, began operations on the Essequibo River on December 19, 2025, replacing the older ARIS IV on the Parika-Supenaam route.
Commissioned to boost regional connectivity and support Guyana’s sovereignty claim over the area, the vessel features modern amenities and double-ended design for efficiency.
Despite initial issues with its bow door during the maiden voyage, it has since transported thousands of passengers and vehicles.
The ferry is part of a broader government plan to modernize ferry services, improve infrastructure, and enhance trade, with a second similar vessel expected for the Georgetown-North West route.
