Maine's 2026 ACA enrollment dropped 7% as expired tax credits caused average premiums to surge 77%.
Maine’s 2026 Affordable Care Act enrollment is falling, with about 5,500 people canceling plans by December 15, a 7% drop from last year, as the expiration of enhanced premium tax credits led to a 77% average premium increase.
By December 13, 57,881 had selected plans, down from 64,678 in 2025, with 34% of cancellations coming from those earning above 400% of the poverty level.
Health experts warn the loss of healthier enrollees could raise costs for remaining participants.
Despite bipartisan support in Congress, including from Maine’s delegation, efforts to extend the credits have stalled, and more cancellations are expected as January bills arrive.
