A lamprey pie sculpture, unveiled in 2024 at Highgrove, honors Gloucester’s royal tradition and environmental legacy.
A stone sculpture of a lamprey pie, created by Gloucester artist Deborah Harrison and installed at Highgrove in 2024, honors a centuries-old tradition of Gloucester sending the dish to British monarchs.
Commissioned to mark King Charles III’s coronation, the artwork commemorates a custom dating back before 1200, possibly linked to King Henry I’s death in 1135.
Proposed by town crier Alan Myatt and commissioned by former council leader Paul James, the piece was approved by the royal household in July 2024.
Carved from Cotswold limestone, it reflects Gloucester’s heritage and the decline of lamprey populations.
The sculpture is part of the King’s Foundation’s nature and sustainability initiatives.
