A judge granted bail to former Louisville officer Brett Hankison, convicted in Breonna Taylor’s 2020 killing, allowing his release during appeal.
A federal judge has granted bail to Brett Hankison, the former Louisville police officer convicted of violating Breonna Taylor’s civil rights during the 2020 raid that killed her, allowing him to be released from prison while appealing his 33-month sentence.
The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that his case raises substantial legal questions, that he poses no flight or safety risk, and cited threats he faced in custody.
Hankison, who began serving his sentence in October at a New Jersey federal prison, is the only officer involved in the raid to be convicted.
The decision does not overturn his conviction but permits him to remain free until the appeals process concludes.
