Iowa and UI agree to restore public access to state historical collections Jan. 1, 2026, after lawsuit over closed research facility.
The State Historical Society of Iowa and the University of Iowa have agreed to ensure public access to Iowa’s historical collections starting January 1, 2026, with the UI Libraries managing requests through its Special Collections and Archives Reading Room.
Materials will be temporarily transferred for use, similar to an interlibrary loan, following a lawsuit over the closure of the Iowa City research facility.
The settlement addresses concerns about transparency and compliance with Iowa Code, while both institutions work on finalizing access procedures.
