Halal-certified venues in Malaysia may display Christmas decorations outside food areas, per updated guidelines.
Malaysia’s Religious Affairs Minister Zulkifli Hasan has clarified that halal-certified hotels and food establishments may display Christmas decorations, as long as they do not violate halal principles or include religious worship items, the halal logo, or permanent fixtures.
The guidance, aligned with a 2023 decision by JAKIM, applies only to food preparation and serving areas, not public or non-halal-certified spaces like lobbies.
Melaka’s religious authorities confirmed the ban is limited to kitchens and dining zones, allowing decorations elsewhere.
The clarification follows criticism from political leaders and business groups over a local circular that sparked concerns about religious inclusivity and tourism.
