FBI crisis response dog Gio retires after 9 years, 140 missions, and pioneering courtroom support.
An FBI crisis response dog, Gio, an English Labrador retriever, is retiring after nearly a decade of service, the bureau announced.
Joining in 2015, Gio completed over 140 assignments, including responding to the 2022 Uvalde school shooting, where he supported victims and families.
Working with handler Melody, he helped more than 4,100 individuals, becoming the first facility dog to assist a victim during federal courtroom testimony—a practice now used nationwide.
His impact led to the expansion of the Crisis Response Canine Program, including the addition of two new dogs, Taz and Peg, in April 2025, with Peg stationed in Dallas.
Gio and Melody were honored at FBI headquarters, and after retirement, Gio will be adopted by Melody to enjoy a quieter life.
