EU app developers demand stricter enforcement of Digital Markets Act against Apple over unequal App Store fees.
European app developers and consumer groups are urging the EU to enforce the Digital Markets Act more strictly against Apple, arguing its App Store fees—13% to 20% on in-app purchases and 5% to 15% on external transactions—still disadvantage European developers compared to U.S. counterparts.
Despite a 2023 €500 million fine for blocking alternative payment methods, the coalition of 20 groups, including Deezer and Proton, says Apple’s updated policies violate the DMA by not allowing truly free alternatives.
They cite a U.S. court ruling limiting Apple’s external fees as creating an uneven playing field, harming innovation and transparency.
Apple has promised future changes starting in January but has not disclosed details, fueling frustration.
The coalition demands stronger EU enforcement and may escalate the case to the European Court of Justice.
The European Commission has not responded.
