Bulgarian man in ICE custody died in Michigan detention center; cause under investigation.
Nenko Gantchev, a 56-year-old Bulgarian man who lived in Chicago for 30 years and ran a trucking business, died December 18, 2025, while in ICE custody at the North Lake Correctional Facility in Michigan.
Found unresponsive in his cell, his death is believed to be from natural causes, though the exact cause remains under investigation.
Gantchev, who had lawful permanent resident status from 2005 to 2009 and was ordered to leave the U.S. in 2023, was arrested in September 2025 and denied bond despite a federal judge’s release order, which was overturned by the Seventh Circuit.
His wife, a U.S. citizen, said he was a law-abiding taxpayer facing a difficult choice between deportation and detention.
Chicago Congresswoman Delia Ramirez called for a transparent investigation, noting 2025 is the deadliest year on record for detainees, with at least 30 deaths reported.
The facility, operated by GEO Group, is one of the largest ICE detention centers in the Midwest, and no official explanation has been provided regarding his death.
