A B.C. judge allows Vancouver to continue removing trees in Stanley Park due to moth and drought damage, despite contract approval violations.
A B.C.
Supreme Court judge has ruled that Vancouver’s tree removal project in Stanley Park can continue, finding the city and park board acted reasonably in responding to a severe hemlock looper moth infestation and drought that damaged about 160,000 trees.
While the court rejected claims of flawed science and inadequate public consultation, it found the city violated its own rules by awarding a $1.9-million sole-source contract to a forestry consultant without Park Board approval.
About 11,000 trees have been removed in three phases, with the final phase targeting roughly 42% of the park’s forested area.
