Alberta panel recommends referendums on leaving CPP, provincial police, immigration control, and greater autonomy.
An Alberta panel chaired by Premier Danielle Smith has recommended holding referendums on leaving the Canada Pension Plan, creating a provincial police force, gaining greater control over immigration, and pursuing constitutional changes to expand provincial autonomy.
The panel, formed after consultations with over 5,000 Albertans, said any CPP exit would require a new pension plan matching or exceeding federal benefits and premiums, along with thorough public education.
It also urged reform of equalization payments and a review of Alberta’s potential to run its own tax system.
Despite survey data showing public skepticism, the panel recommended moving forward with referendums.
The government will review the findings before deciding next steps.
