Whitney Hansen has been named head coach of New Zealand’s Black Ferns on a two-year contract, succeeding Allan Bunting after the team’s 2025 Rugby World Cup semifinal exit.
A former Canterbury player and teacher, Hansen becomes the second woman to lead the six-time world champions.
She brings extensive coaching experience, including leading Matatū to a Sky Super Rugby Aupiki title and serving as inaugural head coach of the Black Ferns XV.
Hansen will oversee 11 Tests in 2026 and the 2027 British & Irish Lions series.
She will be supported by assistant coaches Tony Christie and Riki Flutey, with the full coaching group to be confirmed.
New Zealand Rugby praised her leadership and player pathway expertise.
