A Washington doctor admitted to reusing recalled CPAP machines with dangerous foam, defrauding Medicaid, and endangering patients.
Dr. Eric Haeger, a 57-year-old Washington physician, has pleaded guilty to altering and reusing over 500 recalled CPAP and BiPAP machines originally pulled from the market in June 2021 due to hazardous foam linked to serious health risks.
Between July 2021 and July 2023, Haeger removed the foam from used devices, repackaged them as new, and sold them to patients, including those on Washington Medicaid, while falsely billing the program.
The case, investigated by the FDA, FBI, and others, highlights significant patient safety and fraud concerns.
Haeger faces up to three years in prison and a $250,000 fine at his sentencing on March 24, 2026.
