A U.S. federal court has ordered ICE to grant Indian national Lakhwinder Singh Multani a bond hearing within five business days or release him, ruling his ongoing detention violates the Fifth Amendment and federal law.
The decision, by Judge Jane M. Beckering in Michigan, comes after Multani, arrested in July 2025 on a DUI charge, was held without a proper bond hearing despite having no U.S. criminal record, owning property and businesses in Indiana, and being the primary family provider.
The court found requiring administrative appeals would be futile and emphasized constitutional protections against indefinite detention.
The government must report compliance within six days.
