Texas hires Will Muschamp as defensive coordinator for Citrus Bowl showdown against Michigan.
Texas has hired Will Muschamp as its new defensive coordinator, replacing Pete Kwiatkowski and Duane Akina after a 9-3 season that included a late-season defensive slump.
Muschamp, who previously held the role from 2008 to 2010 and most recently served as a defensive analyst at Georgia, returns to Austin following a career that included head coaching stints at Florida and South Carolina.
The move, announced by coach Steve Sarkisian, aims to revitalize a defense that ranked ninth in yards allowed and sixth in scoring this season, despite finishing ranked in the top 10 nationally.
Muschamp’s first assignment is leading the Longhorns’ defense in the Dec. 31 Citrus Bowl against Michigan.
