Newcastle and Lake Macquarie had the highest crime rates in NSW, especially vehicle thefts and break-ins, in 2025.
Newcastle and Lake Macquarie led New South Wales in multiple crime categories in the 2025 BOCSAR report, including motor vehicle thefts, theft from vehicles, sexual assaults, break-ins, and malicious property damage, despite being the sixth-largest statistical area.
The region reported the highest numbers in these crimes, with 1,182 vehicle thefts and 2,563 thefts from vehicles, and a per capita rate of 2.1 incidents per 100,000—well above the state average.
While some crime rates declined slightly, most remained stable, and NSW Police attributed high thefts to high-density parking areas and unlocked vehicles.
Regional NSW saw broader crime reductions, and the state recorded declines in seven of 13 major crime categories over two years.
Police noted that stable or rising reports of sexual assault and domestic violence may reflect improved victim reporting rather than increased incidents.
