New Zealand allocates $12M to fight yellow-legged hornets in Auckland with traps, surveillance, and public reporting.
New Zealand has allocated $12 million in emergency funding to combat the spread of yellow-legged hornets in Auckland, extending through June 2026.
The effort includes expanded surveillance up to 11 kilometers, deployment of over 730 traps, destruction of 28 nests and 37 queen hornets, and a public awareness campaign urging immediate reporting of sightings.
The government is working with beekeepers and industry partners through a cost-sharing agreement, using reprioritized funds and leveraging tracking technology and expert advice to prevent the hornet from establishing a permanent presence.
