Meg O’Neill, a 55-year-old American energy executive and former CEO of Australia’s Woodside Energy, will become BP’s first female chief executive on April 1, 2025, marking a historic milestone as the first external hire in the company’s history.

O’Neill’s departure from Woodside, where she led since 2021, follows criticism over high-cost projects, weak shareholder returns, and environmental concerns, including the North West Shelf extension near sacred Aboriginal sites.
Her move has drawn mixed reactions, with Woodside’s shares dropping 2.7% and Liz Westcott named acting CEO.
