An Indonesian court sentenced Australian man Lamar Ahchee to 12 years in prison for smuggling 1.7 kg of cocaine into Bali.
An Indonesian court has sentenced Australian citizen Lamar Aaron Ahchee, 43, to 12 years in prison for smuggling 1.7 kilograms of cocaine into Bali, found in 206 plastic bags at his rented home near Kuta Beach in May.
Authorities arrested him after tracking two suspicious packages sent from England.
Though Ahchee denied knowledge of the drugs, citing coercion and fear, the court cited the large quantity, potential harm to public safety and tourism, and his evasiveness during trial.
The sentence exceeded the prosecutor’s nine-year recommendation and includes a 2 billion rupiah fine.
Indonesia, despite strict drug laws and a history of executions, remains a key transit point for international drug trafficking.
