Home Depot installed high-pitched noise devices near a Los Angeles store, sparking backlash over their use to deter day laborers after an ICE raid.
A Home Depot in Los Angeles’s Cypress Park installed high-pitched noise devices on public Caltrans land under a highway overpass, drawing criticism from advocates who say the sounds cause physical distress and are used to deter day laborers.
The devices were reportedly activated after an ICE raid that detained dozens, including a U.S. citizen and child.
Advocates and city councilwoman Eunisses Hernandez called the noise a form of psychological intimidation and urged Home Depot to condemn immigration enforcement in its parking lots.
Home Depot said the devices are part of a safety effort to prevent illegal overnight parking and denied knowledge of or involvement in the raid, stating it cannot interfere with federal operations.
