Dunedin’s George Street greening project transformed a city street into a thriving urban habitat using 2,500 plants, supporting native insects and inspiring sustainable city design.
Dunedin’s George Street greening project transformed a city street into a biodiversity hotspot using 2,500 plants from nearly 60 species, over half native, in planters along a shopping district.
Over two years, insects including native wasps, beetles, spiders, flies, and a rare ground-dwelling beetle, Scopodes fossulatus, colonized the area.
Designed with input from local Māori and the city council, the planters feature themed blocks with varied heights and ground cover, serving as ecological stepping stones.
The initiative demonstrates how small urban spaces can support wildlife, improve wellbeing, and inspire pro-environmental behavior, offering a scalable model for cities facing green space loss.
