Cristian Gutierrez-Ochoa, son-in-law of CJNG leader El Mencho, sentenced to 11.5 years for money laundering and kidnapping related to the cartel.
Cristian Fernando Gutierrez-Ochoa, son-in-law of CJNG leader El Mencho, was sentenced to 11 years and eight months in federal prison for money laundering tied to the violent Mexican cartel.
Arrested in November 2024 in California under a false identity, he was accused of helping kidnap two Mexican Navy members in 2021 to free El Mencho’s wife.
Authorities say he used laundered funds to buy a $1.2 million home.
Though the cartel leader allegedly ordered his death, Gutierrez-Ochoa faked his demise and fled to the U.S.
He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to launder drug proceeds, expressed remorse, and was sentenced by Judge Beryl Howell, who labeled the CJNG a major threat in both Mexico and the U.S.
The case is part of broader U.S. efforts to dismantle the cartel, which was designated a foreign terrorist organization in February.
Other high-ranking members, including El Mencho’s son and brother-in-law, have also received lengthy prison terms.
The U.S. offers a $15 million reward for information leading to El Mencho’s capture.
