AJ McCarron, the former Alabama quarterback who led the Crimson Tide to back-to-back national championships in 2011 and 2012, has been named head coach of the Birmingham Stallions in the United Football League, the UFL announced on December 18, 2025.
The 35-year-old, a Mobile native, succeeds Skip Holtz after four seasons and is making his coaching debut after playing in the NFL and most recently leading the St. Louis Battlehawks to the 2024 UFL Playoffs.
McCarron, who recently withdrew from the Alabama lieutenant governor race, expressed excitement about returning to football in a leadership role, emphasizing his connection to Alabama and commitment to building a winning team.
