Afghanistan repatriated 167 detainees from Pakistan amid ongoing returns of refugees to a crisis-ridden homeland.
On December 18, 2025, Afghanistan confirmed the return of 167 Afghan detainees released from Pakistani prisons, who crossed into the country via the Spin Boldak border crossing and received assistance before being sent to their home provinces.
The repatriation comes amid broader concerns over the over 10,000 Afghan nationals still detained abroad, primarily in Iran and Pakistan.
At the same time, thousands of Afghan refugees are being forcibly returned from neighboring countries through the Torkham crossing, many having lived abroad for years and now returning to a homeland marked by instability, limited services, and worsening food insecurity, with nearly 17 million people facing hunger.
