A Whitecourt family displaced by a fire received $28,375 in donations after a teacher rallied community support.
A house fire in Whitecourt on December 12 displaced the Hourahine family, including Grade 5 student Tristan Hourahine, who escaped with his father but lost two cats.
In response, Tristan’s teacher Chris Landry redirected his class’s annual giving program, sparking a community-wide effort that raised $10,000 through donations from across Canada.
A separate GoFundMe campaign reached $18,375 toward a $22,000 goal.
The family will spend Christmas with relatives in Calgary, and students have given Tristan holiday gifts.
