flag Rwanda reduced child stunting to 27% by 2025, but progress lags its 3% annual target.

Rwanda’s 2025 Demographic and Health Survey shows stunting in children under five declined to 27% from 33% in 2020, with wasting falling to 6% and underweight rates stable. While 11 districts now report stunting above 30%, up from 20 in 2020, progress is uneven, with Gicumbi, Burera, and Ngororero exceeding 35%. The country’s annual stunting reduction of one percentage point lags behind its 3% target. Other gains include a drop in maternal, infant, and under-5 mortality, a decline in fertility to 3.7, and increased family planning use. However, teenage pregnancy rose to 8%, neonatal mortality remains high, and health quality improvements are needed. The government is reviewing its national stunting plan and expanding data systems to strengthen responses.
