The spill, which lasted into the early hours of December 17, sent some waste into Mud Creek, a tributary of the French Broad River Basin.
City officials were notified at 6:28 a.m. on December 17 and stopped the flow by 6:45 a.m. Cleanup is underway, and the city is working with the contractor on corrective actions.
The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality has been notified and will review the incident.
