New Zealanders recycled 71,627 old mobile phones in the past year through the RE:MOBILE program, preventing over 164 tonnes of waste and reducing 355 tonnes of carbon emissions since 2014.
The nationwide initiative, managed by the Telecommunications Forum, collects phones and accessories for reuse, refurbishment, or safe recycling, with over 400 drop-off locations and free online pick-up.
Proceeds support Sustainable Coastlines, contributing $242,091 since 2014.
As 3G networks are phased out, the program encourages responsible disposal to minimize environmental harm and promote a circular economy.
