New Zealand fast-tracked approval for OceanaGold’s Waihi North mine expansion, enabling operations until 2043.
The New Zealand government has fast-tracked approval for OceanaGold’s Waihi North mine expansion, allowing operations until 2043 under the new Fast-track Approvals Act—the first major mining consent under the system.
The project, approved in 112 working days, will expand gold and silver extraction via new open pit and underground mines, with officials estimating $8 billion in export revenue and 800 jobs.
It will contribute $422 million in net Crown revenue and keep 80% of spending in New Zealand.
The approval followed a review of 26 regulations and 60 submissions, with ministers calling it a nationally significant investment.
Environmental groups and local communities oppose the decision, citing risks to conservation land, biodiversity, toxic waste, and limited public and iwi input, and have announced a protest on December 20.
