Ghana’s ex-EPA chief says ending illegal mining needs independent agencies, not politicians, after past efforts failed due to political interference.
Dr. Henry Kwabena Kokofu, former head of Ghana’s Environmental Protection Agency, urged on December 17, 2025, that the fight against illegal mining, or galamsey, be led by state institutions rather than politicians, citing repeated failures of politically driven campaigns.
He pointed to past efforts under Presidents Mahama and Akufo-Addo as examples where initial progress was reversed, particularly during second terms, due to political interference.
Kokofu stressed that independent agencies like the EPA and Water Resources Commission must be properly resourced and coordinated to ensure sustainable results, warning that reliance on political leadership has consistently undermined enforcement and led to environmental degradation and loss of life.
