French authorities probe suspected Russian-linked cyberattack on ferry, arresting a Latvian crew member.
French authorities are investigating a suspected foreign cyberattack after remote access malware was found on the passenger ferry Fantastic docked in Sète, a Mediterranean port.
The malware, capable of enabling remote control of the vessel’s systems, prompted arrests of a Latvian crew member, who faces charges related to hacking and conspiracy, and the release of a Bulgarian crew member.
The probe, led by France’s DGSI intelligence agency, follows intelligence from Italy and raises concerns about foreign interference, with Interior Minister Laurent Nunez suggesting Russia may be behind the incident, though no official accusations were made.
The ferry has resumed operations after security checks, and searches were conducted in Latvia.
The investigation remains ongoing.
