Belarusian journalist’s phone found infected with spyware likely used by KGB since 2021.
A previously unknown Android spyware called ResidentBat was found on the phone of a Belarusian journalist detained by the KGB, according to a joint investigation by Reporters Without Borders and RESIDENT.NGO.
The spyware, which requires physical access to install, can steal calls, messages, files, audio, video, and screenshots, and was likely deployed during the journalist’s interrogation.
Forensic analysis suggests it has been used by Belarusian security forces since at least 2021.
The discovery highlights the ongoing repression of journalists in Belarus, where dozens are imprisoned, and raises alarms about state-sponsored digital surveillance targeting media professionals worldwide.
