Trent Reznor expressed surprise that former Nine Inch Nails drummer Ilan Rubin joined the Foo Fighters after Josh Freese’s departure in May 2025, a move Reznor said was unexpected but practical.
With Rubin’s exit from NIN creating a scheduling gap ahead of the 2026 tour, Reznor opted to rehire Freese, who had previously played with him from 2005 to 2008 and was available.
Reznor emphasized the importance of personal commitment and rapport, noting Freese’s reliability and eagerness to tour.
Freese, who remains unaware of his firing, said he supports the band’s decision.
The lineup changes allowed both bands to continue touring, with Freese returning to Nine Inch Nails for their North American leg.
