Trent Merrin avoided conviction after pleading guilty to stealing $140K in crypto from former teammate Kaide Ellis.
Former NRL player Trent Merrin, 36, avoided a criminal conviction after pleading guilty to obtaining a $140,000 cryptocurrency advantage by deception from former teammate Kaide Ellis.
On December 17, 2025, at Port Kembla Local Court, Merrin received an 18-month conditional release order without a conviction.
He admitted to transferring 1.06 bitcoin from Ellis’s Coinspot account—set up using a seed phrase stored at Merrin’s home—into his own and a business partner’s accounts.
Merrin later apologized, saying he recovered a previously unused seed phrase.
Ellis was repaid over $160,000, including interest.
The court acknowledged full repayment, Merrin’s community standing, and reputational damage as sufficient consequences, with the defense calling the outcome fair and proportionate.
