Supreme Court to hear challenge over Speaker’s unilateral creation of corruption inquiry committee against judge.
The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a challenge by Allahabad High Court Justice Yashwant Varma against the constitution of a three-member inquiry committee formed by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to investigate corruption allegations, including the discovery of burnt cash at his residence.
Varma argues the committee’s formation was illegal because the Speaker acted unilaterally without joint consultation between both Houses of Parliament, as required by the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968.
The court has issued notices to the Lok Sabha Speaker and both parliamentary secretariats, with the next hearing set for January 7, 2026.
