Romanian man sentenced to indefinite mental hospital stay for stabbing 11-year-old girl in London.
A 33-year-old Romanian man, Ioan Pintaru, was sentenced to indefinite detention in a high-security mental hospital after pleading guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent and possessing a knife in the August 12, 2024, stabbing of an 11-year-old Australian girl in London’s Leicester Square.
The girl, now 13, was attacked as she left a Lego store, stabbed eight times in the face, neck, and chest, and required plastic surgery.
Witnesses described the assault as frenzied and violent, with a security guard intervening to subdue Pintaru.
Pintaru, who had a history of mental illness and claimed he believed he needed to go to prison for protection, was deemed unfit to stand trial for attempted murder due to psychosis.
Though physically recovered, the girl continues to suffer psychological trauma.
He remains under an indefinite hospital order under the UK’s Mental Health Act.
