Ohio mandates 15 colleges to overhaul teacher training to follow science-backed reading methods by 2026 or lose state approval.
Fifteen Ohio colleges must fully align their teacher training programs with the Science of Reading by next year or risk losing state approval, Governor Mike DeWine announced after an audit found they still use outdated methods like Balanced Literacy and Whole Language.
The audit, conducted by the University of Texas’s Meadows Center, revealed 33 institutions are fully aligned, five are partially aligned, and 10 are not, with the latter continuing prohibited practices.
DeWine stressed that teaching reading effectively is a moral imperative, requiring phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
All programs must meet 73 metrics within one year, as Ohio joins around 40 states adopting similar evidence-based literacy mandates since 2013.
