A man accused of killing a Tasmanian cop in a 2024 repossession gone wrong must appear in court in person, prosecutors say.
Leigh Geoffrey Sushames, 46, accused of murdering Tasmanian constable Keith Smith, 57, during a June 2024 repossession attempt, must appear in person at his next court hearing for "essential" reasons, according to his lawyer.
Smith, a decorated officer, was fatally shot in North Motton, marking the first fatal police killing in Tasmania in over a century.
Sushames faces murder, attempted murder, and aggravated assault charges and has not entered a plea.
He has appeared via video link from Risdon Prison, but his lawyer argues in-person attendance is necessary due to the case’s complexity.
The Director of Public Prosecutions opposes the move, and Magistrate Evan Hughes questioned security risks, though the defense said Sushames poses no unique threat.
The court adjourned the matter to January 28, 2025, pending a decision.
Sushames also faces 10 additional gun and drug charges, including possession of an unregistered firearm and silencer.
Smith was honored with full ceremonial police honours and remembered as a dedicated community officer.
