Irish authorities seized shark jaw and bear bile from Taiwan and Hong Kong, violating CITES wildlife trade rules.
Revenue officers seized a shark jaw from a package from Taiwan and 15 vials of bear bile from Hong Kong at Irish ports in late August and February, respectively, under CITES regulations banning illegal wildlife trade.
Bear bile is extracted from live bears in inhumane conditions.
The items were intercepted at Dublin’s postal hub and Shannon Airport by Revenue’s anti-smuggling teams using risk-based screening.
Seized wildlife products may be destroyed, retained, or transferred to institutions like Dublin Zoo or the Natural History Museum.
Other recent CITES seizures include lion claws, turtle shells, seahorses, and 4,000 live bees.
