German artist Michael Triegel’s painting of homeless man Burkhard Scheffler as St. Peter was unveiled in December 2025 at the Teutonic College chapel in Vatican City, just steps from Scheffler’s grave.
Scheffler, who died in November 2022 near St. Peter’s Square, was honored by Pope Francis, who referenced him in prayers and homilies, calling him a symbol of the marginalized.
Triegel, a Catholic convert, used Scheffler’s likeness—bearded, wearing a red baseball cap—for a new altar panel in Naumburg Cathedral, part of a project promoting religious reconciliation.
The artwork, now displayed at the Vatican, features real people from diverse backgrounds and serves as a tribute to dignity, inclusion, and compassion.
