Freemasons in UK challenge Met Police’s mandate to disclose membership, calling it discriminatory and a human rights breach.
Freemasons in England, Wales, the Isle of Man, and the Channel Islands are preparing legal action against the Metropolitan Police over its plan to require officers to declare Freemason membership.
The United Grand Lodge of England and affiliated groups argue the policy is discriminatory, based on inadequate consultation, and risks breaching human rights and GDPR protections.
They call the requirement disproportionate, noting only 440 of 32,135 officers are members, and claim it undermines public trust despite Freemasonry’s long-standing ethical standards.
The policy stems from recommendations by the Daniel Morgan Independent Panel, which cited concerns about corruption and public perception.
The Met says the move supports transparency, citing survey results showing two-thirds of staff believe such affiliations affect impartiality.
The Freemasons have issued a letter before action, urging the Met to suspend the policy to avoid a judicial review.
