Dublin man sentenced to 15 months for arson attempt using vegetable oil and damaging property.
Colm Dowling, 68, of Dublin, was sentenced to 15 months in prison for attempting to set a garda’s car on fire with vegetable oil and causing over €7,000 in damage to a business gate in Rathfarnham.
He pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal damage, with CCTV and evidence linking him to both incidents.
The court heard vegetable oil is not an effective accelerant.
Dowling, who has eight prior convictions including four for arson, was on a suspended sentence and cited mental health issues, alcoholism, and personal grievances.
He has been in custody since January 2024 and received psychological support.
